How is your wireless etiquette?

With every new technology comes amazing benefits and uses that change the way we live and interact with others. But new technology, like wireless phones, may also bring new "social rules" for how you use it in the company of others. The following guidelines will help you make the most of your wireless phone while respecting those around you.

A common sense approach
Think of others when you're driving or in a public place.

  • Do not use your phone if it interferes with driving.
  • Be a Good Samaritan. Call 911 to report an accident.
  • Dial when your vehicle is stopped, or before pulling into traffic.
  • Use hands-free devices whenever possible.
  • Set your phone to vibrate or let the call go into voice mail when you're in theaters, restaurants or courtrooms.
  • If you are in a crowded place, turn your ringer down. If you must take the call, make it brief, or ask if you can return the call.
  • Don't shout; keep your voice low.

Remember, your wireless phone is a useful tool — just be conscious of those around you when using it. Help make public places more peaceful for everyone by remembering your wireless etiquette.

After more than a century in business, the pay phone can't compete with modern technology. People just don't have time to dig for change to make a call.

There are currently 1.9 million pay phones dotting the landscape. However, many are becoming obsolete. In fact, BellSouth plans to pull all of its 143,000 pay phones by the end of 2002. Even England's famous red phone booths are going away.

The future of pay phones
There are currently plans to turn some of the pay phone booths into technology kiosks. So, will Superman still have a place to change? It's too close to call.

A 911 emergency call made from your Midwest Wireless phone is always free and could save a life. But please be aware of the following when making a call:

  1. A 911 emergency call made with your wireless telephone is not always answered by a local public safety answering point but may be routed to a state patrol dispatcher.

  2. To help law enforcement locate you, you must provide specific information regarding your location.
