Don't freeze the fun just because it's cold
Snowboarding is a hot new winter sport. Less daring types may prefer skiing or ice skating.

With snow and icy weather on the way, it may seem easier to sit at home in front of the television than to brave the chill. But winter weather doesn't have to mean a sedentary life for you and your family -- the Chicago area offers many fun and exciting winter activities to keep you moving in the cold.

Be a good skate
Lace up your ice skates and go for a spin around the rink; there are many local venues to choose from. The Chicago Park District rinks offer various outdoor locations for skaters, such as the McKinley Park rink at 2210 W. Pershing or Garfield Park at 100 N. Central.

If it's indoor fun you prefer, try the McFetridge Sports Center at 3843 N. California Avenue, where you can skate year-round in private or public sessions, or take lessons from a pro.

A downhill thrill
Beginners and experienced skiers alike will find a host of resources at the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council, which offers ski trips to Switzerland, Michigan and Colorado. The council also hosts monthly meetings and local events for skiers who want fun at a reasonable price. Check out the Chicago Metropolitan Ski Council on the Web at skicmsc.com or call (312) 346-1268.

Bored? No, snowboard!
For something a little different, try snowboarding this winter. Midwest Snowboard Action offers reviews by participants of snowboarding hot spots such as Alpine Valley and Wilmot Mountain in Wisconsin, and Raging Buffalo in Algonquin. For more information, visit www.mwsnow.com
