Homeownership goes solo
  I
n recent years, a solid economy, low interest rates and the tax advantages of owning a home have propelled homeownership rates to new heights.

In fact, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that a record 66 percent of American households own their homes today. Just who is buying these homes?

Homeownership goes solo
The number of unmarried home buyers is up by as much as 30 percent from just a few years ago, while rates for married couples remain relatively steady.

A home for one
Married couples buy most of the homes sold in this country. However, their rates have increased only nominally, while home buying for singles is up by 20 percent to 30 percent from just a few years ago, according to surveys by the National Association of Realtors and Chicago Title and Trust.

If you're single, owning may be a good option. Your monthly payment could be less than your rent payment, plus you stand to get money back on your taxes. Real estate industry insiders suggest identifying the type of home you want (many singles opt for condos, co-ops and town houses), then determining how much you can borrow.
