Ringing in the savings
When it comes to cutting costs from your family budget, don't overlook your monthly phone bill. Having a phone may be a necessity, but there's no need to overpay for local and long-distance services.

Here are some simple steps you can take to connect with savings:

Review your phone bill once a year, and analyze your calling patterns -- you may benefit from a calling plan or special offer such as one that gives discounts for calls to certain states.

Calls outside your local calling area but not far away enough to be covered by long-distance service fall under "regional toll service." Call your local carrier and ask if you qualify for a volume calling plan for those calls. You may be able to pay a flat monthly rate for an expanded local calling area.

Ask your phone company about discounts for signing up for a package of services, such as voice mail and call waiting.
