ONE IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION WHEN YOU INVEST in an annuity is the financial condition of the insurer. Will the company be able to meet its long-term financial commitments to you? This question may be at the forefront of your mind during these challenging economic times. Fortunately, several major independent rating agencies make it easy to assess an insurer’s financial strength. What’s more, you’ll be pleased to know that MassMutual carries excellent ratings from the four leading rating agencies.
The ratings and what’s behind them
Rating services such as A.M. Best Company, Fitch Ratings, Moody’s Investors Service and Standard & Poor’s regularly publish financial-strength ratings on insurers. Each service has its own evaluation system, but they all generally focus on these factors: The company’s financial history; its current financial condition; and its ability to meet its past, current and future claims obligations. Most rating services assign a letter rating to the company based on the evaluation. Ratings do not guarantee the future financial condition of any insurer. But in general, the higher the rating, the greater the potential for the company to fulfill its long-term financial obligations.
